Track One: Spilling Over

This is faith: When tears are (1)Spilling Over and you're on (2)Bruised Knees, when your heart is (3)Broken and bleeding, you still believe that God's promises (4)Will Be Done and you still fight for (5)Freedom

I remember sitting in a coffee shop in Phoenix (circa 2009) when I first started scribbling down the lyrics to Spilling Over. It was the time in my life when I was just starting to allow God to work the idea of a music career into reality. I was scared. And while the song is ultimately about God's love overflowing out of us in defiance of fear, the feeling I had that night was completely overwhelming.

There is something about the feeling of inadequacy that can literally render us frozen. When we feel like we don't have what it takes, it can be nearly impossible for us to do what it seems like we can't. Doubt is a poison that cripples us from doing what we want most, and when we are in this place it is easy to believe that our fear leads us away from God. All too often, we equate doubt with unbelief. But God is faithful. He swoops in (like the superhero He is) and takes what was once fear and doubt and sadness and fills the space with love and grace and truth. As I continued the song, I realized that - more than anything - I wanted that to be true for me. 

When it came time to record Spilling Over, it was important to me that the song sound exposed and imperfect and intimate. Vulnerability and fear and doubt aren't often talked about openly and I really wanted to get across to the listener that this was still something I struggle with. I wanted the song to sound somewhat haunting, and I didn't want it to resolve at the end because the struggle with fear and doubt is really an ongoing battle.


My hope, as you listen to this song, is that you are encouraged. If you are struggling with doubt and fear, please know you are not alone and that you have more ahead of you than you expect. Our fear becomes hope in His hands. This really is just the beginning.

This Is Faith ...

Welcome to my new blog series! I'm really glad you are here. Let's jump right in...

This blog exists to give you a better idea of what Lacy Brooks Music is all about. I titled it "This Is Faith..." because I write music, in large part, based on the idea that faith stands in the face of all the things the world says about what we are supposed to do, how we are supposed to act, and -most of all- who we are supposed to be.

What does that really mean? Well here is what the world says about me:

The world tells me that I can never be a successful artist. That being born with Cerebral Palsy, being from a broken home, not being the ideal body type, and being an introvert, somehow disqualifies me from having a successful career in music or -on some level- making any of my dreams come true. Moreover, the world says that my belief and reliance on God's promise despite these circumstantial things is completely nonsensical.

The world may be telling you similar things. It may be telling you that you can never achieve what you want, what you were born for, because you don't fit into the box the world is comfortable with. But here is the awesome part: we can do it anyways. The glory, friends, is in the triumph of realization that we are free from the expectations and limitations others may try to place on us. Faith is acting in the face of opposition, knowing God is faithful to His word. We don't have to give up, give in, compromise, or settle. The word, "realistic" does not have to mean more to us than the word "possible."

Throughout this blog, I will be sharing my music with you and hopefully encouraging you that when the world says you can't, you absolutely can. In the days to come I am going to be featuring each song from my EP released last year also titled "This is Faith." I'm going to break it down and really give you an in-deapth look at why I wrote each song, what it means to me now, and what I hope you will get from it.
